The Pentagon, Washington DC

Jesus Christ what’s going on? thought Colonel Schwartz, sitting behind his desk at the Pentagon.

He stared at the top-secret intelligence report in front of him. The information in the folder had ultimately cost the life of his agent in Pakistan. It was under his orders that the brave agent had disregarded his personal safety and obtained the documentation necessary for Director Conway.

Colonel Schwartz felt ridden with guilt for relaying the final instructions that would send one of their best agents to his death. He took solace from knowing that the man had not died in vain: the results of his work would change the course of history and the events of the next few days. As Director Conway had impressed upon him, it was not sufficient to have verbal confirmation of the deal with the third party that had carried out the dummy nuclear explosions on behalf of Pakistan. They needed hard documentary evidence if the political wills of the governments attending the summit were to be fully convinced.

Colonel Schwartz flicked towards the back of the folder; the contract that opened up before him clearly identified the seal and signature of the Prime Minister of Pakistan. His intelligence officers had already confirmed that Abdul Wasim Latif was the signatory and further down the page the crest of the third party stood out like a beacon. There was no mistaking the national identity and, for added confirmation, the highest authority in the land had signed the agreement on behalf of the secretive facilitators.

In the end, his agent had ignored the peril of radiation poisoning that would be responsible for his death. He had been present when the government bunker was opened and extracted the documentary evidence from the Pakistani Defence Minister. The circumstances of the opening were violent and chaotic. Those inside tried to keep the hatches secure but the vengeful anger of the people would not go away. He was well positioned when the “drawbridge was finally lowered” by the angry and dying crowds. Ultimately, most of the government executives and their families were killed in the bunker. A few children escaped to suffer a more painful and slower death outside.

Amid the mayhem that ensued, the agent realized his objectives. Slipping into the bunker while the Prime Minister was the focus of attention, the agent had got the information he needed. The Defence Minister had offered no resistance; he actually felt some redemption for his acts, as if he was putting the record straight. The verbal information came quickly but he had to open a sealed vault to obtain the contract. The Prime Minister himself endured a torturous death for his lies. The act of getting the document transported back to Colonel Schwartz was the last the agent carried out.

Once this nightmare was over, Schwartz was determined to do all he could to ensure that his agent and his family received the plaudits they deserved.

If further confirmation were needed to identify the third party and the country working in collusion with India, it sat in another folder to his right.
